Holding the Pose:
2019 Mastery Retreat Recap5 min read

This year, a big part of my personal practice has included the study of Vedic wisdom, as taught by my teacher, Jonni Pollard. In his book, the Golden Sequence he says:“In a cynical age that constantly drowns us with information and conditions us to be mistrustful, the majority of us harbor a deep-seated yearning for more meaning and connection.”

This really stuck with me.

And became the inspiration for everything I want to create going forward.

It was also the invitation to my own heart to go deeper with our retreat guests for the second annual HEA Practice Owner’s Retreat that wrapped up just over a week ago.

I’m completely honored to have co-created an experience with a group of legendary practice owners and expert facilitators. That in the words of one guest “gave us all the opportunity to step beyond the role of practice owner. And to embrace the whole person to see a few things you can change that will make your whole life better”.

To foster “connection with your true self and connection with other humans looking to improve their lives and businesses”.

Central themes of this year’s event were connection, growth and belonging, and I can confidently say we nailed it.

I was full of joy when I compiled the Net Promoter Survey Results from our post-event survey. And found that our score was an incredible 9.09 out of 10.

I’ve had to pinch myself as guests have been tapping into their own wisdom and reporting back wins like “the things I viewed as tough conversations are not that at all.

They are opportunities to really tune in and listen to another person. Which doesn’t create friction, it creates understanding and compassion.”

This truly was a gathering of a very special group of individuals. All who are already making noticeable impact with their businesses and I know have so much more to give and achieve.

I’m excited to watch each attendee’s journey continue to unfold. As they take action on the plans and strategies that came into focus during our time together.

The love and fierce determination that I felt radiating from this group was incredibly powerful to witness.

For the second year, it’s been a complete honor to curate and host this experience.

There’s always of course, room for improvement. But I can safely say that this second retreat went far beyond the first one in terms of impact and the outcomes that were created.

EVERYONE had an amazing time and forged new connection and friendship.

That I know will be extremely valuable in supporting the continued growth that this group will experience through the remainder of 2019.

After it was over, someone asked me what my #1 highlight for the event was.

After thinking about it for a few minutes. I was surprised that the thing that was most memorable was watching the reactions of a few of our new guests as we performed a “happiness activation”.

They were clearly wondering what they had gotten themselves into after traveling for more than 24 hours straight and getting delayed in Mexico City.

But then I got to witness as they relaxed into the experience and began to realize that this was a safe space designed to stretch their idea of what was possible and unlock hidden potential.

So amazing to see the shifts happening in real-time.

A few other highlights that stand out for me:

We learned how to “hold the pose” during uncertainty rather than resorting to old habits for escape.

We went deep on investigating how who we are as individuals. And how we show up profoundly affects the personality and energy of our business.

We explored our need to trust our own intuition. And be confident in what we are offering to our patients and the communities we serve.

We masterminded on how to confidently tell the story of our individual practices. And found tons of high-impact, immediately actionable growth levers just waiting to be leveraged.

Many of which I’ve already been told are seeing huge forward momentum.

Waterfall adventures. The freshest coffee that I’ve ever experienced – literally “farm to cup”, beautiful beach-front sunsets. All of it.

Tons of space to for reflection and restoration – these moments were priceless.

Oh, and of course, MAGIC

Retreat guests: Thank you so much for bringing your everything to this experience, trusting in my vision to show up fully, and not backing down when you were challenged physically or emotionally throughout our time together. It was nothing short of pure inspiration and you set the bar high.

And a huge THANK YOU to everyone that made this event the huge success that it was.

Our Expert Facilitators and Workshop Leaders: Kristoffer KC Carter, Leo Babauta of Zen Habits, Yaniv Shanti, Julie Pham, Rodolfo Carrillo, and Fiorella.

The Attendees: Brad and Sara Stewart, Ann Rhoten, Ria Em, Hanan Merrill, Shelagh Merrill, Dusty Arnold-Jessen, Ben Jessen, Corry Wilcox, Shirley Mcclelland, D’Anne Rudden, Tricia Cusick, and Zsuzsa Novak.

Edward Zaydelman for your inspiration and event production genius throughout the entire year leading up to the retreat, and the extended Experience Vida & Vida by Selina teams for making the “behind the scenes” experience feel effortless.

And of course, Janice for being my #1 partner in all the adventures that continue to unfold.

It was awesome to create this alongside you.

Thank you all.

Sending hugs across the wires.

And it’s far from over.

In fact, in many ways this is just the beginning.

I’ve already started to plan the 2020 retreat happening next year in Costa Rica.

They say the third time is the charm, and I think there may be some truth to that.

There are some big ideas in motion and I hope to see you there 🙂

With Gratitude,

Philip R. Powis
